Felines

Rabies vaccinations are a legal requirement in the state of Virginia. Rabies is 100% fatal. This vaccine is given every year.

FVRCP is considered a core vaccination for all felines, even if they do not go outside. This vaccination protects from Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Feline Calicivirus, and Feline Panleukopenia which are highly contagious and dangerous illnesses. This vaccination is given every 3-4 weeks until pet is 16 weeks old, at that point they receive a 1 year vaccine. After that, they will receive a 3 year vaccine.

The Feline Leukemia vaccination is recommended for all young cats (under one year) as they are more susceptible to infection due to their age. It is also recommended for any adult cats who regularly make trips outside. This vaccine requires one additional booster, and is then given every two years.

We recommend annual labwork for all patients. This allows us to establish a baseline for all patients, which in turn allows early detection of any issues that may arise as your pet ages. We recommend heartworm testing for felines even if they are indoor only, as heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes that can come into the home.

We recommend a fecal test for all feline patients.

We recommend checking a blood pressure every 6 months for senior felines (over 8 years old).

Canines

Rabies vaccinations are a legal requirement in the state of Virginia. Rabies is 100% fatal. This vaccine is given at 16 weeks of age, and is good for 1 year. The next vaccination is good for 3 years.

DAPP is considered a core vaccination for all canines. This vaccine protects against the Distemper virus (life threatening viral infection that affects the respiratory tract, GI tract, and nervous system), Adenovirus (causes liver infections), Parvovirus (life threatening viral infection that affects the intestines) and the Parainfluenza virus (a common cause of kennel cough). This vaccine is given every 3-4 weeks until the pet is 16 weeks old. The last vaccine is good for one year. Subsequent vaccines are good for 3 years.

Lyme disease is spread by ticks. Lyme can cause kidney damage, arthritis, and generalized illness. We recommend all dogs in Virginia stay up to date on a Lyme vaccination. Lyme vaccination requires one initial vaccination and one booster in 3-4 weeks. It is then given annually.

Leptospirosis is considered a core vaccination for all canines. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease dogs can get from puddles or bodies of water that carry urine from infected wildlife such as deer, rabbits, etc. It often causes fatal liver and kidney failure. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, which means your pet could pass the infection to humans. The Leptospirosis vaccination requires one initial vaccination and one booster in 3-4 weeks. It is then given annually.

Bordetella is a respiratory infection that is easily spread amongst dogs, like a cold or the flu. We recommend the Bordetella vaccination is given to all puppies, and to any dog that interacts with other dogs on walks, at doggy daycare, dog parks, grooming, or boarding facilities. This vaccination requires annual boosters.

Canine influenza is an infection similar to Bordetella that can cause more significant illnesses, including pneumonia. We recommend the Canine Influenza vaccination is given to any dog that interacts with other dogs on walks, at doggy daycare, dog parks, grooming, or boarding facilities.
