From Fearful to Fear Free

Missy, a 2-year-old female Shepard Mix in Dominion Valley, was a very anxious pup.

Her 3 brothers loved visitors, but they stressed Missy out. Missy is very “head shy” meaning she does not like people approaching her head on or reaching out to pet her.

This movement causes her stress or discomfort.

Dr. Starke came over for her annual wellness and vaccinations and recognized very quickly that Missy was stressed. Vets To Pets uses Fear Free handling and treatment to reduce our patients stress and fear levels. What is Fear Free you ask?

“Fear Free is the concept of practicing veterinary medicine that involves the reduction of feelings of stress in our patients which in return will result in a better experience for all involved — including pets, owners, and the veterinary team”

Dr. Starke prescribed Missy anti-anxiety medications and rescheduled her appointment so as to not push her and to avoid making her fear worse.

Next time, with the anti-anxiety medication on board, Missy greeted Dr. Starke at the door and was so excited to see them. Dr. Starke could not get over the change in Missy’s demeanor. Missy’s owners were ecstatic at how the medication helped Missy relax and enjoy the visit. Dr. Starke was able to fully examine Missy, collect lab samples and administer her vaccines. Missy even sought out petting!
